Synopsis: 

Getlink (formally Groupe Eurotunnel) are overseeing the installation of a 1GW interconnector link between France and the UK to allow bidirectional energy transfer. This involves the installation of two 320KV DC cables in the north running tunnel of the channel tunnel. As these cables are within the running tunnel they are subject to the requirements of CSM-RA. Also the characteristics of the HVDC power cables and associated communication and monitoring equipment required bespoke and specialist installation equipment (yellow machines).

This presentation will cover both the safety assessment and approvals process implemented for the interconnector and the specialist installation equipment used for its installation.

The Speakers

Steve Turner has extensive knowledge of railway systems operation, integration and safety assessments both in the UK and internationally. He has worked for Alstom, London Underground, Thales and Getlink amongst other high profile clients.

David Oldroyd has extensive experience in all aspects and types of on-track machines and plant, rolling stock and specialist machinery used in rail infrastructure maintenance and renewal, together with their safety assessment and certification / product acceptance. He has worked for Getlink, HS1, CTRL, Alstom, Kershaw and Tamper Corporation.
